BJJ WHITE BELT SURVIVAL - ASK A BLACK BELT - DARUMA DOJO FT PROFESSOR ALBERTO - BJJ - 10122026

As a beginner white belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, what should you focus on learning first?

Before developing an offensive game, new BJJ practitioners need to understand how to defend themselves and survive in difficult positions.

Professor Alberto emphasizes that defense and survival should be the foundation of every white belt's development.

Understanding how to use frames, manage distance and maintain defensive structure allows you to protect yourself when an opponent establishes control.

Whether you're trapped underneath mount, defending back control or caught inside someone's closed guard, recognizing the immediate threats and understanding how to stay safe are essential skills.

These fundamentals become increasingly important as you begin training against more experienced practitioners.

A strong defensive foundation gives you the confidence to remain composed under pressure, recognize opportunities to escape and eventually begin developing your own offensive game.

For beginners, progress isn't always measured by how many submissions you can finish.

It's also measured by how well you understand the positions you're in, how effectively you protect yourself and how consistently you can work toward improving your position.

Learn to defend. Learn to survive. Build your Jiu-Jitsu from there.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
