Basic Jiu Jitsu Guard Retention Drill! #jiujitsu #jiujitsudrills #friscotx

Want to improve your open guard and stop opponents from passing your guard in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? This guard retention drill can help!

In this video, Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates a movement drill designed to help you quickly turn and face your opponent when they're passing your guard or moving behind you.

By using a wide X-shaped leg clamp, grabbing your training partner's ankles, and rotating your body, you can practice recovering your position with speed and control. The drill also teaches you to avoid unnecessarily pushing your opponent away, making your movements more efficient during live sparring.

Practice both directions and build the muscle memory needed for better guard retention!

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
