🥋 The Invisible Jiu Jitsu

From Gracie Allegiance Texas

June 18, 2026

Most people watching this match will see a deep half guard exchange. What they won't see is the gripping battle that determines everything that follows.

My opponent did an excellent job establishing a heavy athletic base, controlling the position with a strong underhook and attempting to step over my head to begin a dangerous passing sequence. At this level, conceding to those grips means conceding the position.

The solution was not speed or strength. It was understanding the hidden connections of Jiu Jitsu.

By reinforcing my grip sequence with the lapel and applying disciplined pressure through multiple points of control, I was able to halt his advance, neutralize the threat, and reconnect the position back to my offensive pathway.

This is what we teach at Gracie Allegiance Texas. Fundamentals are not basic. Fundamentals are what allow seemingly stalled positions to become seamless attacks when the pressure is highest and the outcome matters most.

The art of gripping is often invisible to spectators, but it is where matches are won. 🤙🏽

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
