YIN & YANG: The Principle Behind the Symbol I Episode 004

From Gracie Allegiance Texas

November 3, 2026

What does Yin & Yang really mean? Most recognize the symbol, but few understand the principle behind it.

In Episode 004 of Lord × Lions Studio, Professor Tommy Montoya explores the ancient origins of Yin & Yang, beginning with a personal encounter along a mountain trail in Aspen, Colorado.

From the sunlit and shaded sides of a mountain to the principles of balance, opposition, adaptation, and harmony, we examine how this philosophy connects to Jiu-Jitsu, martial arts education, leadership, and everyday life.

The objective is not simply to recognize a symbol, but to understand the principles it represents and how they can deepen our practice.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
