Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just any martial art; it’s like a complete, building physical prowess, mental toughness, and discipline, while also respecting and teamwork. Gracie Barra, a respected martial arts hub, transports amazing practice to Washington State, creating a haven for both newbies and veterans. Whether you’re keen on upping your fitness game, boosting self-defense, or embarking on a journey of self-improvement, Jiu-Jitsu offers a unique package for every enthusiast—be it youngsters or grown-ups.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Starting in Japan and evolving into what’s now Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) at Gracie Barra, this martial art is all about grappling, ground mastery, and submission tactics instead of punches. Dubbed the “gentle art,” Jiu-Jitsu empowers a smaller individual to outmaneuver a bulkier rival by prioritizing technique over brute force, making it suitable for all physiques. Unlike martial arts that delight in kicks or punches, Jiu-Jitsu is a symphony of joint locks, chokes, and holds, giving practitioners control and advantage. This emphasis on strategy over raw power is at Jiu-Jitsu’s core, which makes it so universally appealing and adaptable.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
