🥋 GRACIE HUMAITÁ: GRIP & GRIND — EPISODE 12

“THA LIGHT-SKIN WESLEY SNIPES”

Meet Khalid Smith: Athlete, Entrepreneur, DJ… and apparently Kansas City’s very own Blade. 🕶️

Khalid is a man of many talents, but in this episode, he talks about something deeper: how Jiu-Jitsu has challenged him to become a more disciplined, well-rounded human being.

The lessons learned on the mats…patience, composure under pressure, humility, problem-solving, and showing up when things get uncomfortable don’t stay on the mats. Khalid has carried them directly into his businesses, his relationships, and the way he approaches life.

Because that’s the real beauty of Jiu-Jitsu: sometimes you come in wanting to learn how to fight… and end up learning how to live better.

Khalid’s story also represents something we want more young men to see: how much is possible when you refuse to limit the kind of man you can become.

You can be strong and creative.
Competitive and compassionate.
An athlete and an entrepreneur.
A fighter and a thinker.
Confident enough to lead and humble enough to keep learning.

Young men should aspire to become men of substance, men with skills, discipline, purpose, curiosity, courage, and character. Men who don’t simply consume the world around them but develop themselves enough to contribute something meaningful to it.

Build your body. Develop your mind. Master a craft. Start the business. Create the art. Learn to lead. Become dependable. Take care of your people. Walk into difficult situations with confidence because you’ve spent years preparing yourself for them.

Don’t chase the appearance of success. Build yourself into a man capable of creating it.

That’s what makes Khalid’s journey worth highlighting.

Athlete. Entrepreneur. DJ. Martial artist. And, most importantly, a man who continues to evolve.

That is part of the culture we want to build at Gracie Humaitá Kansas City. We want young men to walk through our doors and discover that their potential extends far beyond becoming good at Jiu-Jitsu.

The goal isn’t simply to raise better fighters. It’s to inspire young men to become exceptional human beings; men capable of building great lives, strengthening their families, creating opportunities, serving their communities, and eventually becoming examples for the young men coming behind them.

The mat is where we train.

But the man you become is the real victory.

And if Khalid happens to look like Blade while doing it… well, that’s just a bonus!

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
