I think we're going to call this uh we're going to figure out what we're going to call this episode by the end of it.
Speaker 1: It'll be something.
Speaker 2: But I, you know, I went from uh 20 lies your coach tells you or 20 lies that, you know, coaches have told you in your uh you know, for me it's Jiu-Jitsu career. Um, but that's what I I want to talk about that book. Go ahead and introduce yourself. Let's give a shout out to
Speaker 1: Fight Tape as well.
Speaker 2: Take it away, Ben.
Speaker 1: Well, we got a couple things to go over here with uh
Speaker 2: Don't forget to introduce yourself first. Okay, cuz I didn't introduce you properly.
Speaker 1: Hold on, hold on, let me do this.
Speaker 1: Oh, hey, didn't see you there. My name is Ben Stark. You can catch me online MMA Coach Ben on Instagram. I am an international Mixed Martial Arts coach and cut man. Not to mention, super cool dude. And I'm here today with my good buddy, Mr. Milton, and we're going to talk about stuff. But let me tell you a little bit about me. I am a third degree black belt training out of and running American Top Team Palm Beach Gardens, the absolute premier Mixed Martial Arts training facility in the North Palm Beaches. Let me tell you this, Milton, we are the only Academy Safe School in the Palm Beaches.
Speaker 2: Shut your mouth.
Speaker 1: Girl. And we take that with great pride. I
Speaker 2: I love it.
Speaker 1: I tell everyone we had a a dad bring in his daughter, we had some teenage girls, we had a couple new guys and like it's in my introduction at this point. And you know who loves it?
Speaker 2: Parents.
Speaker 1: Parents and women.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: The most. I've had a parent be like, oh, we were we have we have appointments to try some other We're good.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: You're the only one in the county, the only one. And they love it, and it's fabulous. And we love being Academy Safe.
Speaker 2: I think it's amazing. I appreciate your support, brother. You were one of the the first to uh to jump on. Um, were you the second
Speaker 1: We're the third in Florida.
Speaker 2: The third fully accredited?
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 2: Third fully accredited academy. Uh we have
Speaker 1: In Florida. I don't think in total.
Speaker 2: We have so we have a when we say accredited, they've finished the process of everything.
Speaker 1: I think we were like first 10 or 12.
Speaker 2: Yeah. So for those who don't know what Academy Safe is, right? Academy Safe is a nonprofit whose mission is to help clean up the martial arts by advocating for background checks, US Center for Safe Sport certification and a host of other things that make an academy safe. Most things that you're supposed to do, you should do or you're supposed to do by law. Like in some areas, you have to have first aid and CPR. You have to have an AED.
Speaker 1: I opened my LLC like 11 years ago, and I opened my business at the same time. And there were no mandates about getting background checks to work or anything.
Speaker 2: I'll give you an idea, even my academy, I know that they wouldn't uh they wouldn't mind me saying this. Um, before he got his AED, he goes, oh, we got inspected and they cited us for not having an AED. There's no fine. But they're supposed to have an AED, and they wound up getting the AED once they were going through the process. So, um, different you know, every location, every local, every county, every city might have different rules.
Speaker 1: We never had an AED until we went Academy Safe either. And, you know, annual fire inspections, no issues about an AED at all.
Speaker 2: He says uh they were cited for it, no no fine, no like you have to have it by this date that I understand, but then he had it after that.
Speaker 1: Most I don't my experience with the fire marshals has been, hey, man, can you like the light bulbs in an exit sign, like can you get that fixed in the next two weeks? Yeah. Can you give me a call when it's done? Sure. You call him, they send me a picture. See you later. You know, they're pretty reasonable. No one wants to hurt your business.
Speaker 2: Academy Safe, it's uh there's it's really taking off. We've got some really interesting announcements that we're going to make. Um, you know, we've got things happening internationally, not just in in US and Canada, but, you know, across the pond.
Speaker 1: Mm.
Speaker 2: As they say. Um, so some really good things going on, some really good partnerships on the horizon, some really cool partnerships that we have now, like Tap Cancer Out, Epic Roll, Flo and Roll, all doing stuff for us. Uh we went out to, here's my my new favorite bottle. This thing is a monster. I love this thing. Uh I had to get like the ex a bigger cup holder, like in a a little cup holder.
Speaker 1: Still in the cup holder.
Speaker 2: Bro. But I I love it because it's Yeah, cuz it's just the I I drink a lot of water. I'm in the car. Like this one's got electrolytes in it, so like I'm like
Speaker 1: It's good for the process.
Speaker 2: everywhere. Yeah. Good. I didn't know that.
Speaker 1: Water or the electrolytes? Uh staying hydrated.
Speaker 2: Staying hydrated. Okay. So, um, so yeah, like, you know, Flo and Roll's been a huge supporter. We went out to the IBJJF, and we're pretty much going to be, I know, we're going to be at the majority of the IBJJF events that Flo and Roll goes to.
Speaker 1: That's awesome.
Speaker 2: So yeah, so if they're out there, we're going to be out there.
Speaker 1: Like you'll be out there.
Speaker 2: I will physically be there. Our signage is always there.
Speaker 1: California, Las Vegas, you're going all over the country now.
Speaker 2: Uh right now, the the next three that are that we know that we're going to be part of are Miami, the Miami Open down here, which is coming up.
Speaker 1: Miami.
Speaker 2: Um, the uh Kissimmee, which is that's the is it No, is it uh the Pans. That's Pans. Uh coming up in the next couple of months.
Speaker 1: Right.
Speaker 2: And then Vegas again. There's another one in Vegas in September, I believe it's when uh the next Vegas one is.
Speaker 1: You're turning into a celebrity.
Speaker 2: Um, no, it's not about that. You know, you get recognized a little bit for the podcast or even people are like, hey, man, people walk by, they see me in the Academy Safe shirt and they're like, hey, man, I love what you're doing with that.
Speaker 1: That's awesome.
Speaker 2: It's it's a really good feeling. You know, some people stop and they're like,
Speaker 1: And you're going to make your academy and they're like, that's expensive.
Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, I I was talking to somebody yesterday about it, so it's kind of like a good time to talk about it is, um, you know, anything where someone has to spend money is, you know, oh, well, I get it. Listen, I get it.
Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now, as a gym owner, look at me in my face. The second you explain to a parent, young lady, dad, whatever, what Academy Safe is, you're two-thirds sold. I'm telling you. The light bulbs or the the way their eyes pop open when you're like, we're the only one who does this in our county. You're like, what? This isn't normal? And I've had people like still not sign like, oh, we're going to check out. Hey, just do yourself this favor. Ask if their employees are background checked, if they're CPR certified, first, any of it. Just find out if there's any of it.
Speaker 2: Access their insurance. It's public, that's public. Can you know, can we see your your business insurance? You know, are you are you staying current? Um, I was going to say a lot of people when they find out they have to buy an AED is where there's like, oh, or
Speaker 1: I mean, I got a refurb and it was like 700 bucks. It ain't cheap.
Speaker 2: I uh we I've so we give out, I'll give it out now. Um, you know, we have a a partner in Avive. And yeah, they they're the latest and greatest.
Speaker 1: It looks like an iPod.
Speaker 2: It is.
Speaker 1: I said iPod, like it's latest and greatest.
Speaker 2: You could pull up the app, you can track it. I mean, it's going to be 2,500 bucks.
Speaker 1: It's very cool.
Speaker 2: They'll work out a payment plan, especially if you're working with us. Um, there there might be some discounts available. But we have had that problem, like that's a lot of money even if you break up the payments. And I think my gym got it for 550 with the pads, with the with the extra pads. Now they got a refurbished from AEDmarket.
Speaker 1: That's where I got mine, yeah.
Speaker 2: I give that out to everybody. My gym, it was just coincidence that one of the gym owners, his wife, uh I think volunteers at the at their church. They bought an AED for the church. When she found out he was looking for an AED, she says, oh, we just got one. Here's the link. He bought it and made it real easy. And then like if you put it on a card, I don't know if they have like Klarna, you know, like those uh shopping, those applications or companies that will give you credit. Like when you're checking out, you can say use Klarna if you have an account or you can apply right there. I'm using Klarna as an example. I've never used them.
Speaker 1: I don't know if Klarna does.
Speaker 2: It's basically like credit for a purchase. Like you could just do it right there and you're making the payments. They're going to let you check out, you're going to buy it and then you're paying.
Speaker 1: I would think uh it might go with like a care credit credit card. Like I had a care credit account when I had some major tooth surgery.
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1: You know, it was like a lot. So we had to like take it out. But it is a health-oriented thing. You might be able to get your AED with that. They have like way lower than normal rates because it's medical.
Speaker 2: I don't know about that. Maybe that's possible.
Speaker 1: I'm just saying it's medical. I don't know.
Speaker 2: You know, might be able to look into that.
Speaker 1: Mhm.
Speaker 2: Um, so I was going to say, you know, the thing is, we say we have one, two, I think we have three fully accredited academies in uh in Florida. But we have tons more that have signed up that are just going through the process.
Speaker 1: Great.
Speaker 2: So we're checking your certifications and helping you get certified. And then when you have everything and all of your coaches have everything, we're accrediting you. We send you stickers, we send you your shirt, your coffee mug, you can start putting them up on the walls and talk about it.
Speaker 1: Bro, those stickers are gold.
Speaker 2: I did a uh I have some I have a flag design getting done. Now the flag design, one of the reasons why we're like a little apprehensive about just letting people use the logo everywhere is because, right, you could be using the logo and you're not accredited with us anymore. Or, hey, but I passed the background checks, but you didn't do everything. So I'm going to give the flag to like a handful of people like I know you and my my gym, so we can, you know, so we can be, you know, take pictures and be proud of it and it's my home gym. But, you know, for pretty much we're telling people use the accreditation with the dates on it because that, you know, that's when you're accredited and then you've got your annual fee.
Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, first of all, like if you have I find that one way more valuable. So like I like having the Academy Safe logo because we can use it for the IKF banners and stuff. Cool. But having like we are accredited as of this date to this date, like, oh, this is kept up with. Cuz if you just throw the Academy Safe logo up there, it could be forever. You could have been accredited five years ago and have a whole school.
Speaker 2: That's what we want to be careful with.
Speaker 1: That year to year.
Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think like you said, I'm seeing and hearing the same thing, you know, people talk, you know, they like, I had people come in to do a tour or they came in for their free week or their free session. And as soon as we mention it, the light bulb goes off because they're like, oh, nobody's ever told that's a thing. Yeah, nobody's ever told me about that. Um, yeah, I mean, that is a thing. That is, right, especially for women and children, for them to be comfortable. You look, most of the time, you know, mom and dad are coming in or mom's coming in with little Johnny, he's getting bullied in school. He you know, I want to find something for him to do. I want him to know how to take care of himself. They're not thinking about that. The most the main thing they usually ask is, how much does it cost and what time are the classes?
Speaker 1: Bro, like I've had a rash of just like, hey, man, you do training. How much?
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: You want to come in? Not let us know how. Well, then you're probably weren't all that interested.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: You didn't even want to try it.
Speaker 2: Yeah, but and and you don't want that's a tire kicker. We call that a tire kicker. And you don't necessarily want somebody who's just going to judge things on on cost. You know, is it a hole in the wall academy and that's they just do Jiu-Jitsu and they could do great Jiu-Jitsu or hey, I have Jiu-Jitsu, we have MMA, we've got some weights over here. You can come work out. We've got fitness, we've got kids, adults, teens. You know, you start explaining it and it's just like, okay, there's value here, right? So, you know, anytime somebody asks me, you know, I I'll give them a range, you know, the ranges from this to the, well, I don't think you have ranges, but like in my industry for marketing, I say we've got a range.
Speaker 1: You got 12 options.
Speaker 2: You know, it goes from, I'll give you my lowest price up to my my my biggest price and and everything in the middle. We can customize something for you. We just you need to get the ball rolling and find out what you need. We do a free assessment, like, right? So at least in my in the marketing world, we do that, but anytime somebody's just judging, well, you know, you wouldn't go to a, you know, you wouldn't go to somebody who sells a bunch of different cars. Like you go to a dealership and they have different they represent different brands. How much does your car cost? Well, what kind of car do you want? I don't know. Just tell me what car. How much does a car cost? Is it a freaking Hyundai or the a Ferrari or you know, that Porsche in the back, like, come on.
Speaker 1: There's a lot of difficult.
Speaker 2: You know, give me something. Those are usually not going to be the best clients.
Speaker 1: Just like some people like uh for us at least, they they put in a lead form to get a call. We give them a call. A lot of people don't pick it up, it's a strange number. They call back a couple minutes later. They're like, oh, were you looking for martial arts? And they're like, yeah. Like, great. What can I help you with?
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 2: What do you do?
Speaker 1: Well, we do a lot of things. You know, you break it down. What are you looking for? I don't know what any of those are.
Speaker 2: I got a little trick for you. When uh when you're calling them back, is that a landline or is it all your cell phone?
Speaker 1: Oh, they no, they call me back.
Speaker 2: But they're okay, so but
Speaker 1: So the initial call would come from my marketing company.
Speaker 2: It's coming from your cell phone.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 2: It's all to your cell phone. Okay.
Speaker 1: Right to my pocket. I used to have a landline, but I'm like, oh, I'm missing so much stuff.
Speaker 2: Just going to give you, I mean, you might know this trick. It's not even a trick. I mean, it's just a thing, like I know on an iPhone. If um, if I'm going to call somebody, I'm going to call somebody back, text them first, it'll tell them on that side when they get the text like, it'll we believe it's this person, like it'll put the name or the business and it'll say like, uh, looks like, I forget exactly how it says, but it says it might it might be Milton. Milton Campus, right? Um, so that when you call them, it doesn't come up a spam or now it also shows that name, that possible name. So like, hey, I think you can even say like, hey, this is Ben. It reads the text and and then puts Ben into the like it says it looks like this is Ben, maybe you know the person, right? So just doing that and when you call, I know on my phone, I get tons of spam. So almost every call that I get is just like that I'm like, all right, I pick it up. 99.9% of the time, it's spam. Somebody has my cell phone number. I was going to mention in the beginning, so that's a little trick with that. I was going to mention in the beginning, I'm actually thinking about the AI that we use for our phone receptionist for Academy Safe and for Black Belt. Um, I can use it as my personal. So I started to set it up for my personal because I get so many just spam calls cuz my phone my cell phone number has has been I for two decades, I've always used it. That's the first number when I start a business, it's on registrations, it's out there. It's on old stuff. I might have X for a quote.
Speaker 1: But even on your personal line, you can put on the DND list.
Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't really nobody they don't they they have to like follow the law and do it. I had uh we built a betting site for somebody one time. So we like
Speaker 1: Gambling or like betting?
Speaker 2: Yeah, like betting tips.
Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
Speaker 2: Like betting tips, like you used to be like, but it's kind of like you were somebody's broker.
Speaker 1: Spreadsheets and like
Speaker 2: No, like you were like their broker, like you'd call up the guy, you'd be like, hey, what do you hey, Ben, what's the line on this Sunday?
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. What do I got today? What am I betting on?
Speaker 2: And if you gave me a tip, I'm supposed to give you a percentage. If you gave me a tip that worked out, I give you a percentage.
Speaker 1: Oh, like that guy from the UFC that was also a coach and went bet on or against his own fighters.
Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that. Probably not exactly like that.
Speaker 1: That guy's going to jail.
Speaker 2: So, so uh I did a I went on other betting sites and did some requests to see the flow so that we understood kind of what he needed more for the website. I still get that was 20 years ago. I still get
Speaker 1: Have you unsubscribed?
Speaker 2: I always do the like reported as junk. Just the phone number's out there and then they call me from 10 different numbers. So what I'm doing now is setting up the AI for my personal, and it's after a certain amount of rings if I don't pick it up, the AI will pick it up. So I'm going to try that and see how it works for me personally to scrub some of the calls cuz I don't want to change my phone number, but that might be nice.
Speaker 1: It's kind of like uh have you have you ever called someone with like Google Voice?
Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like
Speaker 1: It's like, you've called their Google. Can you tell say your name?
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: And then it's like, hey, do you want to talk to Ben?
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1: Which is really cool.
Speaker 2: Yeah. I have a Google Voice number for the Academy Safe, so it actually when they call the like there's a number for the AI, but there's a number our number. Our number goes to Google Voice and then it just immediately forwards to the AI and then the AI picks up and its job is to get name, email, phone number, right? If it's a lead, answer questions, it'll answer questions as well. It pulls info from the website, we can program it with prompts.
Speaker 1: Does it tell people it's AI?
Speaker 2: Um, I do because I want people to be like, hey, that's AI. Like it's a product we sell, so I say, uh I think on the Black Belt one I I have it say.
Speaker 1: I'm going to call your number when I get home. I want to see what it's like.
Speaker 2: Yeah, talk to it. Ask your questions. Um, I believe on the Black Belt one I have it saying, hi, I've used all martial arts women's names. Um, I believe the one for Black Belt is is Rose. I like Rose. Uh I think it's Rose. Uh we had Ronda for Academy Safe. Ronda Rousey. Um, so I Honda Housey.
Speaker 1: Oh, Honda Housey.
Speaker 2: Honda Housey. Uh, so, uh yeah, I'm going to probably do it for myself just to to screen some of the calls cuz I just get a crazy amount of spam calls, but I don't want to change my number. Family, friends, you know, the podcast, like yeah, yeah, yeah. So I'm going to do that, but again, it'll be like if I don't, that looks like spam, I'll let the AI pick up. And then I'm going to have it say something like, if you know Milton, just send him a text, I'll call you back. Uh if this is a business call or something, please, you know, give us your information, we'll have them get back to you. Something like that.
Speaker 1: Oh, so you don't even want it to be able to forward to you?
Speaker 2: So I'm going to have it ring to me, it'll ring to me first, and if after X amount of rings, I don't pick it up, the AI will pick it up. It'll it'll push to the AI. I have to make that happen. So,
Speaker 1: Tell me when you set up, I'm going to call you. And like let me go to AI.
Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got to play with this weekend. I certain things that are like not priority, I save for.
Speaker 1: Is it going to record our voices and then turn us into its own podcast where it can take our sponsor?
Speaker 2: It records the voice and gives me a transcript. Hi, AI's gone pretty far.
Speaker 1: But can it sample? Can it make you? You know what I'm saying? Can it answer the phone as you just cuz for
Speaker 2: We're not there yet, probably. Oh, you know what? I think there are some out there that you can record your voice.
Speaker 1: Hi, this is Milton's voice.
Speaker 2: There is actually uh I see a lot of commercials for like people who record themselves. Like you before AI really blew up, I actually did a meeting with a guy who's like, we record like you say, like read like one minute worth of stuff, like read anything and we'll get enough words that we could then create any video. Before AI really like blew up.
Speaker 1: What's that? That faceless Instagram profiles or like the hot AI girl that you can't quite tell like those things.
Speaker 2: They would they needed video of you, they needed video of you talking, um, and then they could just I could just create a video of Ben saying whatever I wanted it to say.
Speaker 1: That's dangerous.
Speaker 2: That was and that was a couple years ago before this like that was like prior.
Speaker 1: They can do that now.
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, now it's
Speaker 1: I've seen like movie trailers that are like, oh, this is a real movie. Like, nah.
Speaker 2: Do you see the guy there's one I get all the time on YouTube where the guy's like uh his arm's on fire. He goes, uh, this is AI and his arm's on fire. And then the screen opens up and he's like, he's just talking, but then it's a woman talking and it's uh like a gladiator talking, you know. He's like, this is AI, I'm AI, you know, like it's all him talking, but it's it changes the face, the whole thing changes. It's crazy.
Speaker 1: Catfishing is going to go to a whole new level.
Speaker 2: Oh, man, I think about that shit all the time.
Speaker 1: Being in the dating game, you must be terrified.
Speaker 2: Um, not really.
Speaker 1: No.
Speaker 2: Not on the market like that anymore, Ben. I'll tell you later.
Speaker 1: Don't tell him.
Speaker 1: Oh.
Speaker 1: Unbelievable.
Speaker 2: I'm not on the market.
Speaker 1: Maybe we're not as good friends as I thought.
Speaker 1: Jeez.
Speaker 2: Yeah, some some things that, you know, I I'm I'm I'm a I'm big on like you jinx things when you tell too many people.
Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2: I I was like, with relationships, I don't I mean, not that I'm like I'm
Speaker 1: It's nobody's business what you're doing.
Speaker 2: Yeah, I just I keep that shit to myself.
Speaker 1: But the fans want to know.
Speaker 2: Nobody wants to know.
Speaker 1: Welcome to our new segment. Let's date Milton.
Speaker 2: No, don't don't do that. I am not a serial dater. Whoever's watching this, if anybody
Speaker 1: If you are dedicated, hey, bro, bro, bro, you're going to mess me up here. You're going to mess me, you're going to mess me up.
Speaker 2: I am not a serial dater.
Speaker 1: No, no one ever said you were.
Speaker 2: I'm not a serial dater by any means. Um, let's let's so, hey, so
Speaker 1: That's a weird situation. Okay.
Speaker 2: Let's uh let's do some of these uh quick shout outs. So, um, let's talk about the book. Uh this is pronounced Yurei, I believe, right? I got clarification on that today. Yurei. Uh this is a book by our friend Mike Bidwell from BJJ After 40. Uh it's called Yurei, Legend of the Shadow Blade. Right? Very cool. I just got it. Put it in my bag to bring here. I got it like last night, I think. Um, got it, brought it here, and I'm hoping to start reading it. Crack that thing open this weekend. Uh this is a fiction book. He did a like a BJJ After 4 After 40 manual that that's really cool. That's so this is his second book, so really just want to support him.
Speaker 1: I don't think it's fictional. I think it's
Speaker 2: You can get this on Amazon, everyone, if you uh if you want to check it out.
Speaker 2: What's that?
Speaker 1: There's a lot of blood on the cover. I like it already.
Speaker 2: There's a lot of blood on the cover. Uh it very interesting. If you follow follow Mike at BJJ After 40 on on Facebook or Instagram and you'll learn the story. He puts out especially on Facebook, he has a like a long form video of how this book came to be. I think it was like from a from like a uh like a mushroom session. Like the idea came to him after that, I believe. I don't want to I don't want to misquote, but
Speaker 1: Next time Mike comes to town, we should hang out longer than just a Jiu-Jitsu seminar.
Speaker 2: Yeah, we have some uh some uh conversations.
Speaker 1: Favorite. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's Florida, baby.
Speaker 2: Uh we talked about Academy Safe. You can check out Academy Safe at academysafe.org. Use code JJD5, spelling out five, JJD F I V E. Uh if you use that code to check out, you get a couple of bucks off your membership. Um, like we said, you don't need to do all the things or have all the things to sign up. We're actually introducing a coaches section. So if you're just a random coach and your gym isn't going to do, we're going to have a listing of all the coaches. We're working on that too. We have a really cool webmaster now that just handles our site. Aside from my marketing company that does editing, we have somebody that's just like bringing new ideas and design. We read the the the homepage. We just added uh sex registry um checks uh websites under our resources page for the US, Canada, and Interpol has like a place where you can check. Right? So you can really check everything. So that's all on our website. That's on our website now. Homepage is being redone. Uh but there's just lots of things that, you know, we want to be like a resource, truly like a a growing source of information for people that, you: know, want to number one, get listed and be, you know, in good standing and then for, you know, parents and and practitioners that are like, I'm looking for a new gym. Let's go here first. We list you as long as the coach passes the background check, we immediately launch your listing page, so the academy's listed. So you're getting benefit right away. Um, and then it'll show you not accredited yet, and once you get accredited, we'll list you as accredited. So there's just kind of levels to it.
Speaker 1: I just had this idea. It literally just popped in my head. It is not hard to get on say, local news, CBS 12, whatever. Like at least for my perception, cuz they've literally called me before, hey, do you guys have any events coming up that we can go? They just need stuff. You know? Have you guys thought at least on the local level, reaching out to like one of the news stations? Cuz when you think about it, it's not just that we're we're trying to push Academy Safe. We're we're pushing the entire business, the entire community.
Speaker 2: The narrative that you that that you should be getting that you should have your staff in any business, especially when you're dealing with children and or women where you have to touch somebody, roll around, fight with them. There should be there should be the norm.
Speaker 1: But let the public know that like, hey, these people aren't checked. They don't have to do this. And they're not cuz it does save money and it isn't cheap. But we are being able to provide this and look, at least in our local area, all these gyms have got on board because they believe in you. You know what I mean? And then that goes to the community.
Speaker 2: We actually we did have a board member originally that was supposed to do that for us. Uh it didn't work out. Um, unfortunately, he wasn't able to um to do what we needed him to do, which was to get us in, listen, he's the same guy that got the podcast in the Sun Sentinel a few years back when uh when my uh buddy Miguel was uh was co-hosting and we were filming in Boca Raton and Miami. Um, so he does it as a business. Um, he just wasn't able to do it for us now, you know, time, energy. Um, it was wasn't able to do that. We so we had somebody. So essentially, like we do need like a PR person, but again, you know, we want to, you know, everybody wants to get paid and I respect that. I don't I don't hold that against anybody, but we need people to donate their time. Excuse me, I put out, you know, a post about um somebody, you know, helping with, you know, we needed a webmaster. And uh we got a a former police officer up in the Chicago area that's uh built his own website, is familiar with WordPress. He's done a great job. And uh he's been bringing lots of ideas to the table. So I mean, that's what we need, you know, it's like people believing in the in the um in the idea, in the concept, in the fact that, you know, the martial arts needs to be cleaned up. And uh, you know, um, I've offered him, I said, hey, if you ever need anything, any help with marketing, let me know. We gave him a free Academy Safe membership. Uh so he's going through the process. We just we we meet with him every Wednesday and we were just talking to him about the AEDs. That's why it was fresh on my mind. We were just talking, he's like, I just got to get the AED. And I'm like, hey, look, I know, you know, I know it could be expensive. I went through everything we just talked about and gave him that link. So, um, so yeah, I mean, it's it's moving forward, man. I'm like, I don't want to say surprised. I am very happy at where we are. You know, we're we're close we're getting close to 200 members total.
Speaker 1: That's awesome.
Speaker 2: Individual coaches. I'm calling those members, right? And then accredited academies, you know, once you get accredited. Uh so again, you know, we're we're trying to make so like a coach can just do it and he a coach can say, maybe it's a coach who does like lots of privates.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 2: And that coach can say, hey, look, I just want you to know, look at my page. I'm here. I have a background check. This is where you can check it out. It's a private nonprofit is doing this. Um, and look, and I always say this because it's the first thing that I'm going to think of as a parent. Um, we can't stop somebody from doing something shitty in the future. We're not stopping that's not what this is meant to do. This is meant to show people who are uh on board with, you know, sharing this information, right? Hey, look, we're back we're checking our people. You know, the again, we can't stop somebody from doing something bad, but we can make sure that everybody in the academy has like US Center for Safe Sport, right? They go through that course, and that makes people, we've talked about this before, that makes people go, their head's like on a swivel, like, okay, okay, yeah, that's a little weird. Maybe we shouldn't do that. That was in the video. Why is that person talking to that person? Is that person being groomed? Like you start to think about these things. You know, there's we've got some academies with, you know, up to 20 coaches. That's all that's a lot of coaches, a lot of classes. And guess what? You know, there could be a perv amongst them.
Speaker 1: There's a lot of pervs.
Speaker 2: Surprise, you know. There could be a perv in there, and he passes a background check, but you know what? Now everybody's more conscious and watching. They're literally seeing the sign on the door when they walk in and maybe there's, you know, maybe we get them a flag and it's on the wall and they're literally like, you know, we're like, they're policing themselves, let's say it that way, right? So, um, yeah, I'm I'm excited about where it's going. I'm I'm again, I don't want to say surprised. I knew that we needed it. It took off quickly. We're working with I say we're nearing um 200 because we're working, got to turn that off. We're working with uh UCLA. They have 20 approximately 20 different programs. Uh martial arts programs and each program has a coach and an assistant, an assistant coach. So we're working on getting all that done. You know, there were things that happened with like the government cutting UCLA UCLA off for funding. There was like a little bit of battle there.
Speaker 1: I didn't know that.
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's, you know, some things in the news about funding being cut. So they had to backtrack a little bit and other things became became priority, but we're still working with the with the director over there. And uh he just emailed us. I I told him, you know, one of the things was just time, with everything that's changed there, there's a shift in his time and his priorities. And I said, look, just have your coaches call us. We've got everything that we need. We just have to like get their okay on certain information that they are okay with sharing with us. Name, address, phone number, yeah. They do background checks. They do Center for Safe Sport, they do US Center for Safe Sport certification already. So so much of it's done, so we figured out how do we get that information on how do we collab and so on. So, um, so when I say I'm when I say close to to 200, we've got the spreadsheet. We literally need to go down and each one of them has to okay with their information being released from UCLA to us. So that's where we're at, but like we've got the spreadsheet with everybody. So that's 40 coaches, potentially 40 coaches. Uh and then there's going to be a handful that just don't do it or somebody that's just like, well, I only help out here. I don't I don't coach anywhere else. We offered them, hey, look, if you're a coach or an owner, you'll get it through UCLA here, and we'll give it to you free for your we'll start an academy page for you. If you want to get accredited, you got to put through the rest of your academy, but we're going to list you. And now you have a free membership as long as you're with UCLA and we have this agreement with them. So, I mean, again, so we're nearing 200. And uh yeah, it's exciting to see, you know, I see the numbers every day. So, uh very cool. Let me do these last couple of shout outs. So again, you know, we've got uh Mike Bidwell's new book. Check it out on Amazon. Uh thank you to our friends over at Flo and Roll. Got my new water, uh my uh water bottle, uh from the my water my water bottle. Am I saying it right? Water bottle at the last IBJJF in Vegas. Um, I had what else? I had a couple. Oh, I have like a bag of patches and keychains and things that I'm going to bring to your event this weekend. Uh I'm going to have it like maybe try to just do a little giveaway or maybe give it away to some of the kids. Like there's some cute little like keychains and colorful things and some patches and stuff like that. Uh but Flo and Roll's hands down the best custom gear and no gi gear in the business. You can visit them on Instagram at Flo_roll. Excuse me. At Flo_n_roll. Uh check out the custom designs they've created for academies and competitors all across the country. We were talking about the pre-order program. We weren't talking about that on air yet. So you were asking about the pre-order program that some companies like put um like you can buy this academy's gear. That's great. What Flo and Roll does, he does a pre-order program. So he puts all of your gear online, your students can buy it. Then they print it. They take that money, use it to print and get everything to you and directly to if anybody place an order online, they'll send it directly to them. But you take the profit from that and then get your bulk order done, right? What you need for your academy. So you're not laying out money for the entire order. You're you're laying out a little bit of money for the artwork. Whatever he charges, I think honestly, it's like under 500 bucks. Now your stuff's online, you're you send all your students to order from there. You still get the profit, he either sends you a check or now you take that and you place that towards your larger bulk order for the stuff you're going to get. And again, he ships everything directly to the to the students and now you have gear in your academy. So that's his pre-order program. It's available if you go to his site, you can see who's got a pre-order program. But your question was like, does he keep the link up for the for the academy? As I understand it, he does not. What he does is that academy might go, hey, six months later say, hey, we're ready for another order. Same artwork, same ghee, we like everything the way it is. We don't have to change anything. Turn it back on. I'm going to start sending my students there again. Now I'll do my next bulk order. I ran out of stuff in my academy or I'm all out of A3s. I'm all out of belts. I'm all out of this. Turn on the pre-order, let some people buy. Takes that cash and then places it towards the order, which I think is incredibly convenient, especially like we know, look, who wants, you know, we're business owners, who wants to lay out thousands of dollars for gear? That's going to sit and has to be sold over time. That's that's difficult. So we get that.
Speaker 1: 50 kimonos, that's a lot of money.
Speaker 2: And like he sends it to like my backpack for the gym. I have like a small backpack when I go lift. I have my I got a really nice Flo and Roll bag for for for Jiu-Jitsu, bigger, can get my ghee in there. But just like my gloves, I throw my water bottle. I have a few things that I bring to the gym with me. I use the backpack, the string, you know, one of those string you pull it tight. I use that as my backpack. That was from my ghee. They they put the ghee comes in a bag, it's beautiful, says Flo and Roll on it. Like they do a really good job of of getting you the stuff. All of your gear comes in like the shirt t-shirt comes in in a little Flo and Roll bag. He does a really good job at like the presentation. Like your shit looks on point when your students are getting it. You know, and then they again, they're getting this extra bag that they don't even know they're getting. He throws in some stickers, he throws in some stuff from us, he throws in stuff from other people he works with. So you can go check them out at Flo and Roll.com. You get 20% off of your online order. So if you're just ordering like one ghee, you're ordering anything, you're going to use code JJD. That it does not work on the custom orders or the pre-order stuff, but you can get a uh 20% off on your orders. Um, that is it. So, what are we going to name this podcast? What do we what do we want to call this?
Speaker 1: Well, obviously, this fight this this this podcast is brought to you by Fight Tape. If you couldn't see our shirts. We accidentally matched.
Speaker 2: Fight Tape, yeah, Fight Tape on your bottle.
Speaker 1: Boom.
Speaker 2: Turn that around. There you go. We didn't see enough Fight Tape.
Speaker 1: Not there's it's on the front and the back.
Speaker 2: Hey, there you go. I saw that packing video again. Your packing video.
Speaker 1: I just put one up. I was like, oh, dude, I haven't posted in a while.
Speaker 2: It's the same one. It's the same one. It's the repost of the old one.
Speaker 1: Oh, you did another one? Oh, you did another one? I've done I've done like five or 10 of them.
Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm I'm watching it and I know you sped it up and I'm like, man, he could do this so much faster if he just had the stack of tape.
Speaker 1: You're like, but then it's too fast. No, right. I had like, you have to go one at a time. It's what people want to see.
Speaker 2: I just think it's funny. I'm like, I'm going to bust his balls about, hey, why are you just putting one roll of tape?
Speaker 1: I think I think people really like the sound. Yeah, it's the um that MS what is that MS
Speaker 2: ASMR.
Speaker 1: ASMR kind of feel to it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It does that. Yeah. The crinkling of paper.
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it has. And you get a lot of views on those, right? I I feel like
Speaker 1: I haven't had one blow up, but I've had I've had a couple decent views on them.
Speaker 2: By the way, I was going to say your guys, not only, I mean, I don't know if somebody's helping your some of your students out with there with their social media as well, but they do a really good job there.
Speaker 1: Uh like the brand stuff.
Speaker 2: The kid that's going to the kid that's going to fight, uh I just saw a video like his first amateur fight.
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2: What's his name? Kurt.
Speaker 1: Kurt.
Speaker 2: Kurt. So is the other guy, the guy with the dreads?
Speaker 1: Corey.
Speaker 2: Corey. He's fighting in two weeks. But they they both do a really good job at getting social media out there. Are they doing it with the with the guy that
Speaker 1: I was approached by a guy uh named, I believe it's Alex, it's definitely his real name, but I think his last name is pronounced like Mercado.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 1: Uh, he's a videographer. And he's like, he was he's reached out to me. He's like, hey, man, I've been doing this for a long time, but I always just doing work. I want to do something I enjoy. And we got to chat and and he was like, and we kind of settled on like a UFC embedded kind of thing.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: And I was like, just by chance, I got four guys booked. Now, down to two, unfortunately.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 1: But like all my guys had pretty good stories. You know, Kurt's this kid, he started training at 13. He's done a ton of grappling tournaments. He's done point kickboxing, he's done full contact kickboxing. He turned 18 December 18th, or December 12th. And I was how fast can we book this? January 24th. We're good to go.
Speaker 2: Is it Combat Night?
Speaker 1: Combat Night up in Orlando.
Speaker 2: Awesome. Sweet.
Speaker 1: Right. So I was like, you got that cool story. Corey, Corey is just the the coolest guy. He's just the cool.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: Great guy to work with. My other guys had crazier stories.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: But I had one quite dramatic actually. We'll talk about that afterwards. Uh and he was like, yeah, awesome. And so I didn't know what we'd get. He came in, he got some he did all of it in gym. He wants to get a little more in depth next time, I think.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: I was like, how cool would it be if you to go to school with Kurt? Well, he's a senior in high school.
Speaker 2: Oh, shit. Yeah.
Speaker 1: Getting ready for this.
Speaker 2: You got to get permission.
Speaker 1: Right. Or at least, you know, hey, Kurt, I need you to film this. I need you to film this. Do it landscape, send it to me.
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, probably him doing it himself. We can get him as soon as he walks out the doors. Like probably get on campus and get him when he's coming out of the school.
Speaker 1: But he this time we've done everything pretty much in gym, but it's not too far off from like a UFC embedded kind of thing. It looks awesome.
Speaker 2: I'm always curious, so I I mean, I don't know if you've had a had a conversation with him about it, but they do the two of them specifically. I know I follow them as well. Um, cuz sometimes I see it and I'm like, oh, that's not Ben's. Oh, that's his. Okay, that's his. He's it's on his channel and I'm sure they collab and all that stuff. But I'm always interested like I'm curious about somebody like that who's in high school putting out that kind of social media content. What kind of feedback that he's getting from from students, friends, girls, you know?
Speaker 1: He's all follow each other. They see that. I mean, that's
Speaker 2: You know, you see him pounding on somebody, it's just like, I'm sure the girls are like, hey.
Speaker 1: Dude, he he is a good kid. He he dated the same girl for like on and off for like three years. Dated another one. Like that's it. Like he's not hoeing around. He's clean, he's well behaved, he's a good student.
Speaker 2: Does he like is he reporting back like, man, the girls are like
Speaker 1: I don't know. I think more than anything it's dudes. He was like, dude, my history teacher is a brown belt. And he's like, you want to come train in my gym? You're really good. He's like, no, I don't. You know. Come to mine.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: And like, I know like we've been on fight trips, and it could just be that, hey, like there's other fighters in the area cuz we're here, but like we've been stopped in a public, oh, dude, I've seen you online.
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1: I know I get it like locally. Hey, I've seen you do do you run a gym? Yep. And which is awesome. It means it's working.
Speaker 2: You know, you know what's funny about this, I mean, I'm asking the question. So you've answered that question, but like for me as an older guy, where I get it is in the in the gym, um, or if I visited a friend's gym or something like that. Like I'm going to go out to a Hanas, they got a a ceremony like in March that I got scheduled like. So, I I you know what, I didn't get it in the beginning cuz I was just always at my school. I did this, I was at my school. Everybody knew, they saw it grow. Some of them were on the podcast. So it was like very normal. My coach used to drop a joke or two about uh about the, you know, the podcast here. Hey, hey, what are you doing a podcast over there in the corner, you know, talking? And um,
Speaker 1: Watch you say media's in.
Speaker 2: So like I I've had it happen a couple of times in my school where somebody, I see them looking at me, even like parents, I feel like they're looking at me trying to figure out where they know me from or they know now they know me, but want to say something and don't. And then I've had like parents or somebody come up to me. That person that I saw looking at me one day and then they come up to me and I'm just thinking they're looking at me. I'm like, all right, they're looking at me. They're they're looking at a tons of people. They're watching the class. And then they'll come up to me and be like, hey, man, I really love the podcast. And I'm like, oh, that okay, so you did recognize me.
Speaker 1: I only now.
Speaker 2: And I've had a parent and a student do that in the last couple weeks where somebody asked me, it was really cool. The guy was just asked, he's like, hey, um, he's like, hey, man, you know, I watched the podcast, uh, you know, he's like, what was the, you know, why did you start it or what was the, you know, you know, tell me give me the story of like how this started. Why did you do it? And, you know, I explain to him, I just did it for fun. I was working for another company, had nothing to do with anything else that I was doing like it does now where, you know, it's it's kind of like
Speaker 1: Commingle.
Speaker 2: meshed with everything else that I do just by sheer coincidence. Uh but um, yeah, you know, so so again, I you know, I see somebody looking at me and then I'm like, then they come up to me. Uh Sean's always messing with me. He's just like, people came up to me at the IBJJF like either, hey, I like what you're doing with the with the Academy Safe or like, hey, can I take a picture with you? They knew me from the podcast. Listen to you all time. But Sean gives it to me hard. He's like, oh, you're famous now, huh? And I'm like, not, I mean, he's like two or three people coming up to you, you know, it's no big deal.
Speaker 1: I've had two of my students, like guys that have been in my gym for six, eight, 10 months. Come up and be like, hey, uh, I watched that show you're on.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: And we embarrassed about that?
Speaker 2: Yeah, super chill. Half the guys are high anyway, so there's like, hey,
Speaker 1: Wait, what?
Speaker 2: Go fight and then, you know, it's just like,
Speaker 1: Bro, you want to rip one and then rip one?
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. It's uh that is one of the one of the things that I absolutely love about Jiu-Jitsu is that I could be halfway across the country and tell somebody I do Jiu-Jitsu and it says, oh, you're your brother, your sister, whatever, you know, you're immediately connected. And it's just like, it's just a different vibe and you want to go over here and start talking about who you know and what you do and did you compete and what, you know, it's it's it's just such a different vibe. I get like there might be like a little bit of clashing of heads amongst the gyms, but once that's over, I feel like Jiu-Jitsu as a whole, it's just like it's so welcoming. I don't I haven't experienced other martial arts being like that, but we're we're just different, I think. It's so welcoming. Uh Mitchell, the guy who runs Combat Night, he keeps his license in his training bag, in his trunk. So that if he gets pulled over, he's like, oh, it's in my gym bag. He can then pull out the ghee, look for a reaction, see if they pull out the gloves. And he's like, he says it's gotten him out of like a good handful of tickets.
Speaker 1: That's awesome.
Speaker 2: I'm like, that's a genius idea.
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2: Yeah, I've uh I've got enough stuff on my car that says Jiu-Jitsu.
Speaker 1: I need to get cauliflower ears.
Speaker 1: I don't have any stickers on my car.
Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't have it. Just the left. Cauliflower ear. You don't you don't have any?
Speaker 1: Seven.
Speaker 2: I just watched a video of a kid. There was a kid getting his ear drained. He looked really young, wrestler. Really young. And I'm like, why do you have cauliflower ear?
Speaker 1: Bangin' heads, baby.
Speaker 2: But you should be wearing headgear. And why aren't your parents telling you to wear headgear?
Speaker 1: Headgear sucks.
Speaker 1: Have you ever worn headgear?
Speaker 2: You know what you know what headgear I couldn't I wore I I wrestled a little bit in junior high. Those big foamy the shitty old ones, yeah. But you know what, when I would spar at my gym, I couldn't wear the traditional boxing headgear. I I felt very it made me feel very claustrophobic and I would I would want to free. They're they're proven bad. So headgear is meant to prevent cuts, not concussions. And when you wear those big headgears, your likelihood of concussion, I think they said goes up like 30 to 40%. You got a bigger head with more weight and it's harder to see. You're blinded. I felt very claustrophobic. I I had headgear. I bought it. But like I never wore it. I bought it and I put it on. I started to spar and I was like, I I was like, I can't wear this. Can I take this off? I have my my mouthpiece at least. And we're not going full out. And then I just never wore it. And then honestly, like nobody ever really wore it. Nobody wore the headgear. I didn't I didn't like it. But I was going to say that's one way that you can get the cauliflower, you know, the the strikes from the from that. They were kids coming up that would have their friends like knuckle and just like bang on their ear.
Speaker 1: Oh, you like me.
Speaker 2: I'm happy I don't have it cuz I also have really big ears. Like I the thicker I get, they look smaller, but if I lose weight, these things stick out like crazy. Yeah. Uh my I when my daughter was born, I bought a Dumbo stuffed animal cuz my my her mom made like, you know, yeah, big ears. Big ears. I was skinnier, I had big ears. I bought a Dumbo that was the doll I bought when she gave birth to my child. I was like, I bought her that and I think some flowers. Um, but it was a Dumbo thing cuz she was so worried that my daughter was going to have my ears. And she did.
Speaker 1: Oh my God.
Speaker 2: Hey, fellow Jiu-Jitsu Dummies. Think about this. How well do you know the people who are training your kids? Does your academy run background checks on all staff members, not just the owner? That's why there's Academy Safe. We mandate those checks, plus crucial US Center for Safe Sport certification and concussion training. But we require even more. Our accredited gyms must also have defibrillators on premises, CPR, first aid, and AED certification, security cameras, rank and lineage checks, and business insurance. Don't guess. No. Demand safety for your family. Find an accredited gym at academysafe.org. Academy Safe, the highest standards in martial arts safety.
