"Know Your New Breed Black Belts" Episode 8 - John Gutta & Claire North

From New Breed Training Center

May 18, 2020

On this episode of "Know Your New Breed Black Belts," we feature not one, but two of our black belts, John Gutta & Claire North! (Well, Claire is really one of John's Black Belts...)

John is a First Degree BJJ Black Belt (2016) while Claire recently received hers recently in December 2019. Together, along with Jace Vevera, they founded and run Tipping Point Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

John is arguably the best (homegrown) BJJ Black Belt in all of Iowa and has always been tip of the spear when it comes to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu movement in Iowa.

During this episode, we talk about the following and more:
- How it was to learn to excel in BJJ without having a full-time professor present.
- Growing one of the most competitive teams in the Midwest from a University Club!
- Importance of Competition in BJJ Development
- The Art of Coaching
- Listening to their new English Bulldog, Ruby, snore for the first half of the interivew, lol
- Favorite Moments in BJJ

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
