Acts 8 — The Gospel Spreads Beyond Jerusalem
Following Stephen’s death, persecution scatters the believers, but those who are scattered continue preaching the word. Saul seeks to destroy the church, while Philip goes to Samaria and proclaims Christ. Miraculous healings accompany his preaching, and there is great joy in the city as men and women believe and are baptized.
When Peter and John arrive, they pray for the Samaritan believers and lay hands on them, and they receive the Holy Spirit. Simon, who had previously astonished the people with sorcery, offers money for the ability to confer the Spirit. Peter rebukes him, exposing the condition of his heart and calling him to repentance.
The chapter then follows Philip as God directs him to an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah. Beginning with that Scripture, Philip preaches Jesus to him. The official is baptized and continues on his journey rejoicing, while Philip continues preaching in the cities along his route.
