Most passes fail because of impatience and a lack of intentionality.

In this video I troubleshoot my cross grip pass in competition. Same pass, three different outcomes.

Clip 1: I fail to close the distance with the collar grip and clear the feet off my hips = no pass

Clip 2: I close the distance and clear the feet but I'm not able to puncture the knee elbow connection = no pass

Clip 3: Putting it all together: close the distance, clear the feet, puncture the knee elbow connection = pass (plus a back take and strangle for good measure!)

This is what progress actually looks like in competition: testing, failing, refining, and adapting under resistance.

Be intentional with your grappling. Passing is shaped by the problems your opponent gives you.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
