3 CONCEPTS TO IMPROVE YOUR ROLLING BACK ATTACKS

Like most of Jiu Jitsu, people tend to overcomplicate these attacks. Instead, focus on a few key concepts:

1) Control a leg: Get one of their legs between yours, ideally above the knee so you’re controlling the thigh.

2) Understand the roll: The roll isn’t the goal, it’s just the movement that gets you behind the knees. Like all back takes, we need to get behind the knees and elbows.

3) Chest to back: Close the space. If your chest isn’t connected to their back, you're not on the back yet.

In this video, I break down how these concepts show up in 3 different scenarios:

• Clip 1: From a top pinning position

• Clip 2: Guarded against a standing opponent

• Clip 3: Guarded against a seated opponent

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
