Front Headlock to Vice Grip: Darce, Japanese Necktie, and More

Front Headlock to Vice Grip: Darce, Japanese Necktie, and More

From The Lair

April 22, 2026

The front headlock is one of the most reliable positions in no-gi grappling, but I've seen a lot of people get there and get lost if they can't find the guillotine. This video covers how to transition into the vice grip and use it to break your opponent down to their side, which opens up a whole chain of attacks.

We start with the d'arce choke as the primary finish, then cover the Japanese necktie for when you can't get your arm through deep enough to complete the d'arce. Finally, we look at how to hit the Japanese necktie when your opponent is still turtled and you can't break them down.

Three techniques from the vice grip, a position that is surprisingly under used.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
