#77 Luigi Fioravanti: From UFC to BJJ Hobbyist

Let's say you make it to the biggest stage in MMA, where do you go after? Today I sit down with my good friend Luigi Fioravant. Former UFC fighter and now a pure jiu-jitsu artist. It was awesome to get to pick someone's brain about what it's like to be cheered by thousands and then pay to compete in IBJJF tournaments. Luigi also has a very interesting perspective when it comes to the cops need/don't need BJJ argument. Because Luigi himself is a police officer. Enjoy! Your health is like a credit card.. You can definitely put things onto your credit card once in a while. You can even use a credit card to help bridge the gap when you're short on funds. But sooner or later you need to pay it off. But if you keep on making withdrawals against your card without ever putting money back into it then you're going to end up in serious trouble. Your health is the same way. You can't borrow against it indefinitely. If you keep asking your body to push hard without giving it the time and support to recover then things are eventually going to go catastrophically wrong. After beating the crap out of your body you need to balance the books by giving it the opportunity to recover. Hard training without quality recovery is a recipe for disaster, so recovery is a skill you need to master as well. Today I talk with Matt Kirtley, better known to many as 'Aesopian', about - Changes to jiu-jitsu culture, - Crazy martial arts cults, - Channeling of ancient spirits, - How we can get more out of drilling, - Red flags that you're in a jiu-jitsu cult - And much more I met Matt ages ago when he published step-by-step breakdowns for the reverse omoplata and the rolling crucifix attack on a forum which I then republished (with permission) on Grapplearts. He's good people! He is a jiu-jitsu black belt who has been heavily involved in online jiu-jitsu culture for 15 years. He writes extensively at Inverted Gear, has helped answer hundreds of BJJ questions for White Belt Wednesdays, and is a Functional Range Conditioning coach. If you enjoyed this episode then check out - Episode 290 with Steve Kwan about BJJ Cults and Conspiracies, - Episode 291 with Derek Beres from the Conspirituality Pod about Cults and Conspiracies in the Yoga, Wellness and BJJ Community - Episode 297 with Mathew Remski about Cults, Prophecies and Deprogramming Your Friends. (Yes, I know there's a theme, but in my opinion focussing on this stuff is more important than ever nowadays.) Door-Step Promotions During Lockdown with Rumble Martial Arts in Keswick

Our gym in Keswick's been put back on Lockdown and we've taken students back to online Zoom classes until we're able to re-open again. In this video Coach Dani and Professor Jones are running around on Saturday January 30th 2021 to do "door-front promotions" for Rumble Martial Arts Youth Thai-Jitsu Program. 3 students earned stripes and 1 student received a long-overdue yellow belt for all their hard work and dedication. 🙂 These kids are all fantastic and have been working hard and being consistent all throughout the pandemic and it's almost been an entire year! Weather it's the virtual online classes, in person classes or modified in-person classes with various modifications due to regulations, these students have been there putting in the work.Big congrats to each of them and we really enjoyed running around and visiting these great families that we've not been able to see in person for a long time. Other than these great youth promotions, this video mentions our other Zoom classes (anyone interested please send us a message), Coach Dani's Valentine's Smash Heart Cakes that she has available and our BIG RUMBLE RAFFLE that we've got going on right now. 60 Second Self Defense 03- Tripod Sweep

The third installment of our new series “60 Second Self Defense Tips.” This series, shot at Bayshore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Hazlet, NJ, is being developed with the aim to provide people with some FREE, easily understood self defense techniques in only (around) a minute! This minute shows a "SWEEP" which is a technique from and bottom "GUARD" position that reverses the position, bringing your opponent to the ground, and concluding with you on top. This video has been produced in partnership with the Tackle Depression Foundation (@tackledpression), and teaches a traditional jiu jitsu (BJJ) mount escape. At our school we teach this technique in both our kids and adult fundamentals programs, as escaping the Mount position is one of the most important self defense skills that everyone should have! Enjoy, let us know what you think, and of course, if you have any questions!
