A product of Salvador’s Jardim Cajazeiras favela, Gutemberg Pereira started jiu-jitsu as a teenager at Fight Club under Marcio Bittencourt, Marcílio, and Marcelo Villas-Boas after a family crisis pushed him toward the mats. A blue belt fan of Rodolfo Vieira, he traveled to Rio to beg Júlio César Pereira for a spot on Grappling Fight Team’s competitive squad—and got it. Relocating to the US in 2015 after a Roberto Abreu camp led to an invitation from Kelly Hymore’s GF Team Toledo, Pereira earned his black belt from Júlio César Pereira and later became a leading face of GFT’s Rio pro-squad before returning stateside in late 2023 to represent Art Of Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Costa Mesa.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.
That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
