Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on ground combat, with the exception of throwing techniques. There are no strikes or kicks, but joint locks and choke techniques are used. BJJ supports the idea that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker by using effective technique, leverage, and, most importantly, taking the fight to the ground, immobilizing or neutralizing the opponent. Sparring and physical conditioning play an important role in training. In MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), BJJ techniques are used regularly and effectively and are one of the basic martial arts that one needs to excel in this sport.
