After overcoming a cancer diagnosis in 2014, shortly after receiving his black belt, he returned to competition and achieved remarkable success, becoming a 4-time Pan-American Champion, World Pro Champion, ACB Champion, and King of the Mats Champion. His lineage traces through Carlos Gracie → Helio Gracie → Carlson Gracie → Crézio de Souza → André Almeida → Rafael Barbosa/Leandro Escobar → João Gabriel Rocha.

Professor Martins is an elite competitor with an impressive competitive resume, including IBJJF Master World Champion in 2016 and Ranked #1 in the World in the IBJJF Master 2 Division during the 2017/2018 season. He was personally awarded by Professor Carlos Gracie Jr. for his outstanding competitive achievements. His competition success spans across the United States, Japan, Spain, UAE, Brazil, and Europe, with multiple gold medals at prestigious events including American Nationals, Pan Ams, and numerous IBJJF Opens.
