Why These Black Belts Quit Carlos Machado’s Academy…

From CMJJ Headquarters

October 2, 2026

Black belts actually QUIT when Carlos Machado introduced bowing at his Jiu-Jitsu academy. 😳🥋

In Episode 31 of Coffee Time with Carlos Machado, Carlos and Lindsay Machado look back at a period when seemingly small changes created some surprisingly big reactions.

But Lindsay explains that the conflict wasn’t really just about bowing.

It reflected a larger shift in academy culture—setting expectations, addressing entitlement, and changing behaviors that had been accepted for years.

And when Lindsay started enforcing those boundaries?

She became “enemy of the state number one.” 😂

Sometimes changing a culture means being willing to deal with resistance along the way.

☕ Episode 31 with Lindsay Machado is OUT NOW!

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
