What happens when the people you trained begin competing with the very academy that helped develop them?
In Episode 31 of Coffee Time with Carlos Machado, Carlos and Lindsay Machado reflect on one of the more painful sides of running a Jiu-Jitsu academy.
With multiple black belts offering training of their own, what seemed small individually eventually became a much larger business problem. Addressing it meant making difficult decisions—and sometimes saying goodbye to people Carlos genuinely cared about.
Lindsay remembers Carlos standing on the mat in tears as he explained what had to happen.
But Carlos shares an important perspective that came from those experiences: relationships have cycles. You only have a certain window of time together, so never take your students—or the relationships you build along the way—for granted.
