โ€œTrust the technique. They're not going to touch you.โ€ ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ”ฅ

That's the advice Royce Gracie remembers receiving from his father, Hรฉlio Gracie, before stepping into the cage.

In Episode 32 of Coffee Time with Carlos Machado, UFC pioneer Royce Gracie shares how his father and the Gracie family prepared him mentally for competition.

Even with bare-knuckle fighting and the uncertainty of facing unfamiliar opponents, Royce remembers feeling almost no pressure. He wasn't focused on what might happen if he lost. His focus was simply on trusting the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques he had trained.

Carlos also recalls the famous Gracie family entrance, with everyone walking in a line, hands on one another's shoulders.

For Royce, that tradition represented something deeper: drawing energy and confidence from the family members surrounding him.

It's a remarkable story about mental preparation, family support, confidence, and trusting your training under pressure.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere โ€” but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it โ€” every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
