They Warned Him NOT to Move to America…

From CMJJ Headquarters

October 29, 2026

🇺🇸 What do Australians REALLY think about living in America?

When Australian entrepreneur Lui Monforte moved to Texas in 2017, people warned him about guns, politics, and everything they had seen about America on TV. But his actual experience surprised them!

On Coffee Time with Carlos Machado, Lui Monforte, co-owner of The Aussie Grind alongside his wife Angie, shares how Americans welcomed their family, supported their business through COVID, and completely challenged the negative perceptions they had heard before moving.

From Australian views of America to the reality of living in Texas, this conversation explores media stereotypes, American hospitality, immigration, and why firsthand experiences can change everything.

☕ Is America different from how it's portrayed in the media? Tell us what you think in the comments!

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
