DARUMA DOJO - ASK A BLACK BELT UNDER 90 SEC - WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I GET STUCK IN A BAD POSITION?

What should you do when you're stuck in a bad position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

One of the biggest differences between beginners and experienced practitioners isn't toughness, it's decision-making under pressure.

When you panic, your technique disappears.

Your breathing changes, your movements become rushed and it's easy to miss the small details that lead to an escape.

The best escape strategies start with staying calm, protecting the most important threats, and solving one problem at a time.

In Jiu-Jitsu, every bad position has a sequence of priorities. Learn to recognize them, and you'll become much harder to submit.

Slow your mind. Trust your fundamentals. Then make the next right move.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
