Your first submission is one you don’t forget. AMERICANA, OH YEAH!
The Americana from side control is a great submission for newer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students because it teaches an important relationship between position, control and submission.
Side control gives you the ability to control your opponent’s upper body, limit their ability to turn and isolate an arm. From there, the Americana introduces a fundamental principle: the submission becomes much easier when your opponent is already controlled.
For beginners, that lesson matters.
Don’t rush to collect submissions. Learn how to establish the position, recognize when an arm becomes isolated and understand why the submission is available.
And when you finally hit your first Americana...
AMERICANA, OH YEAH!
