DARUMA DOJO - ASK A BLACK BELT UNDER 90 SECONDS - HOW DO I KNOW IM IMPROVING? - BJJ - JIU JITSU

How do you know if you're getting better at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Many students judge their progress by submissions, rounds won, or how they perform against higher belts. But those aren't always the best indicators of improvement.

Real progress comes from training with intention.

Setting clear goals gives every class a purpose. Whether it's improving your guard retention, escaping side control, or successfully applying a technique you learned that week, deliberate practice creates measurable growth over time.

The students who improve the fastest aren't always the most athletic, they're the ones who consistently train with focus, evaluate their progress, and build one skill at a time.

In Jiu-Jitsu, progress isn't accidental. It's intentional.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
