Kesa Gatame becomes especially difficult to defend when control of the upper body removes the opponent’s ability to rebuild their frames.

The keylock is effective because the submission develops from that existing positional control. With the shoulder line pinned and the elbow prevented from returning to a strong defensive position, the isolated arm becomes increasingly vulnerable to rotational pressure.

This is what makes strong pinning systems so valuable in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo: control and submission are not separate objectives. The submission is often a consequence of maintaining the pin.

Position creates the conditions. The submission takes advantage of them.
