What Should I Do Off the Mat to Improve My Jiu-Jitsu? | Ask a Black Belt | Daruma Dojo | BJJ

What you do off the mat can have a direct impact on the quality and longevity of your Jiu-Jitsu.

You don’t need to build your entire life around specialized BJJ conditioning. Swimming, hiking, walking and strength training can all develop physical qualities that support your time on the mats, from cardiovascular capacity and leg endurance to strength and injury resilience.

The important part is finding something you actually enjoy enough to do consistently.

A supplemental training routine only works if it becomes a habit. Choose an activity that complements your Jiu-Jitsu, fits your lifestyle and allows you to return to the mats stronger and better prepared to train.

Consistency off the mat supports consistency on it.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
