How Can I Inspire My Kids to Love Jiu-Jitsu? | Ask a Black Belt | Daruma Dojo | Bay Area BJJ

From Daruma Dojo

One of the best ways to introduce your children to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to let them see what it means to you.

Bring them to the dojo. Let them watch you train, interact with your teammates and enjoy your time on the mats. Let them see that training, taking care of yourself and being part of a positive community are simply things your family values.

Children learn a great deal from the examples around them.

That doesn’t mean they have to follow the same path. As Professor Alberto explains, you can’t force a child to love Jiu-Jitsu. You can introduce them to it, give them positive experiences around it and allow their interest to develop naturally.

If they see you enjoying the journey, one day they may want to step onto the mats beside you.

Lead by example. Give them the opportunity. Let their own love for Jiu-Jitsu grow from there.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
