Self-defense begins before a physical confrontation ever reaches the ground.

Awareness of your surroundings, recognizing potential danger and avoiding the situation whenever possible should always come first. If a confrontation does happen, drawing attention to the situation, creating distance and finding an opportunity to safely get away are priorities.

But not every situation allows you to disengage.

This is where self-defense training becomes important. Practicing realistic scenarios such as headlock escapes, grabs, bear hugs and other forms of physical control helps develop the ability to stay composed, protect yourself and respond when someone is actively trying to restrain or isolate you.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives you valuable tools for controlling another person, but effective self-defense also requires understanding when to create distance, when to escape and when physical engagement becomes necessary.

The goal of self-defense isn’t to win a fight.

It’s to get home safely.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
