How To Do an Arm Triangle From Mount

From Diamondback Jiu-Jitsu

October 3, 2026

Here is how to set up and finish an arm triangle from mount.

Instead of trying to overpower a strong opponent and force their arm into position, Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates a finger-crawl setup that helps move the arm up over an opponent's head while maintaining control. He then breaks down where to position your head at a 45 degree angle on the outside of your opponent's arm, how to secure the hand-to-hand connection, and how to use a quick back step to position yourself on the Arm Triangle side to finish the submission.

For the finish, Professor Jones says to keep the legs bent, spreads his knees wide, drives his head into the outside part of the arm at an angle, and applies pressure to complete the arm triangle.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
