What Good Coaches Do Differently: Lessons from the range with Instructor Zee
Good coaching isn't limited to one sport, system, or discipline.
After spending a weekend in Nashville teaching FireARMED® alongside Instructor Zee, we kept noticing the same coaching principles we use in fighting showing up on the firearms range.
In this episode of Second Plan A, we break down what good coaching actually looks like: meeting students where they are, isolating skills before adding complexity, creating drills with a specific purpose, progressively adding variables, and eventually moving from teaching techniques to giving students problems to solve.
We also talk about where self-defense training often goes wrong. When does a drill become useless? How much realism do you actually need? When should context be removed? And are we teaching students to solve problems, or creating problems that justify the solutions we already teach?
If you coach self-defense, martial arts, firearms, or any other physical skill, this episode is an invitation to look beyond your own discipline and ask a simple question:
Why am I teaching this?
