Apologize episode ends abruptly, had a slight technical glitch, recording software froze last second... Thankfully we got 99% of it.

As always thank you for listening.

Episode Description

A white belt asks a black belt to roll. Is that disrespectful—or just someone looking for a training partner?

Nick Kugelman and Jacen Flynn, black belts and co-owners of SYSTEM JIU-JITSU in Meridian, Idaho, stress test the claim that lower belts shouldn’t ask upper belts to roll...including the coach.

Is this rule about respect, safety, and boundaries, or protecting rank and ego?

Should coaches get different treatment?

Is a student trying to test themselves against an instructor a problem, or part of what training is for?

At the center of the debate: being allowed to ask for a round isn’t the same as being entitled to one.

Can we keep the respect without keeping the restriction?

KEEP IT. MODIFY IT. KILL IT. Does this rule survive the stress test?

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
