The fastest way to teach your child resilience isn't another lecture. It's letting them watch you be bad at something.
Kids spend all day surrounded by adults who handle everything perfectly. In normal life your competency is maxed out — you drive, you cook — which leaves your child as the only one constantly struggling. That's why sideline motivation falls flat. Your praise doesn't land, because you aren't the one experiencing the discomfort.
Step onto a grappling mat together to learn something new from scratch and your competency drops right to their level. You fumble a technique, take a correction from the coach, and fail in plain sight. When your kid watches you tap, reset and laugh it off, being bad at something new finally gets normalized. That shared vulnerability builds a common vocabulary — so when they're stuck on homework, telling them to reset their position actually means something, because you've both been stuck under real pressure on the same mat.
