3 Footwork Variations to Set Up Your Kick 🥊 Muay Thai Breakdown

From Northwest Fighting Arts

June 30, 2026

Coach Daniel breaks down three footwork variations that set up a clean, powerful kick in Muay Thai. Most people throw their kick straight from where they're standing, and that's exactly why it gets checked or seen coming. These three setups change that.

Step into it, closing distance and loading the kick in one motion
The hop step, or skip step, for closing distance fast without telegraphing
The switch kick, changing stance to attack from an angle your opponent isn't ready for

Each one solves a different problem. Step in works when you need to close ground without losing power. The hop step is built for speed and surprise. The switch kick changes the angle entirely and is one of the best tools for getting around a guard. Drill all three and you stop being predictable.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
