Stay 1 Step Ahead | Guard Pass And Go Behind

From Primate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Stay one step ahead of your opponent. 🧠

When you can anticipate your opponent’s reaction, you can already be setting up your next attack before they even make their move.

In this sequence, we use a loose passing approach to clear the knees and force a decision. Our opponent can either stay on their back and concede the pass, or turn to turtle in an attempt to recover guard.

If they turtle, we’re already waiting with the front headlock.

From there, we threaten the guillotine. If their hands come up to defend the neck, we take advantage of the opening and go behind.

The goal isn’t just to react faster. It’s to understand your opponent’s options so you’re always one step ahead.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
