Ep. 80: Surface Area & Blading

BJJ Mental Models

This week Steve and Matt discuss the concept of surface area, and why it's important to expose as little of your body's surface area as possible. This strategy is sometimes referred to by the Danaher Death Squad as blading. When you're on top, minimizing surface area makes it much harder for your opponent to block your guard passes. When you're on bottom, minimizing surface area makes it much harder for your opponent to stabilize an offensive position. **Mental models discussed in this episode:** - Surface Area [https://bjjmentalmodels.com/surface-area/](https://bjjmentalmodels.com/surface-area/)- Leading Edges [https://bjjmentalmodels.com/leading-edges/](https://bjjmentalmodels.com/leading-edges/)- Force Vectors [https://bjjmentalmodels.com/force-vectors/](https://bjjmentalmodels.com/force-vectors/)- Dominant Angles [https://bjjmentalmodels.com/dominant-angles/](https://bjjmentalmodels.com/dominant-angles/)- Elbow-Knee Connection [https://bjjmentalmodels.com/elbow-knee-connection/](https://bjjmentalmodels.com/elbow-knee-connection/)- Minimize Attack Vectors [https://bjjmentalmodels.com/minimize-attack-vectors/](https://bjjmentalmodels.com/minimize-attack-vectors/) **IMPORTANT: BJJ Mental Models needs your help.** In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the future for Steve and Matt is uncertain. What are the Fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu?

I Suck At Jiu Jitsu Show

I ask, "How do I suck less at Jiu-Jitsu." Everyone says, "Focus on the basics." What does that mean? Is it like when you're 6 and ask where babies come from and your mom says, "you'll find out when you're older." Are we just not smart enough to know the basics? Well, I have a theory on what the basics actually are and why everyone's answers to "the basics" are different. I'm absolutely thrilled to welcome Oleg Taktarov to the podcast. Oleg used his Sambo skills to win UFC 6, beat Dolph Lungren in a widely publicised boxing match, and fought at the infamous Pentagon Combat event which ended in a riot and got MMA banned in Rio de Janeiro. Oleg is also a great teacher - I personally use techniques and concepts I learned from him more than 20 years ago almost every day that I step onto the mats. Today we cover dealing with fear in MMA matches, the path to mastering striking as well as grappling, training the Russian special forces, the advantages of leglocks, working in the movies, and the role he would most like to play. If you enjoy this episode then giving it a rating on your favorite podcast platform would be super-appreciated. Stuff like that really helps! Stephan Kesting
