Alan Moraes was born on April 16, 1977 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began his martial arts career through judo at M.A.B.E. at age 10, training under coach Josemar. Alan was undefeated throughout six years, winning the inter-tournament 5 times, being the country's inter collegiate champion and two time Colégio Veiga de Almeida tournament champion. In 1992, Alan had his first contact with Jiu Jitsu as a Judo athlete for the Flamengo club. His first BJJ coach was Marcelo Alonso, followed by instructor Marinho who awarded his belts through purple. Ari Galo promoted him to brown belt and invited him to assist with adults classes. On December 2002, after podium runs in the World Cup and Rio State Championships, Alan received his black belt from Carlson Gracie Junior.
