## Overview

**Name:** Fábio Gurgel

## Bio

The first black belt ever awarded by Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti, Fábio Gurgel co-founded Alliance Jiu-Jitsu in 1993 alongside his master and fellow black belts Alexandre Paiva and Fernando Gurgel. A dominant competitor in the early CBJJ era, he won the inaugural World Championships in 1996 and added Mundial titles in 1997, 2000, and 2001, while also taking three straight Brazilian National Championships from 1994 to 1996. His competitive résumé extended into vale tudo, where he defeated Denilson Maia in the 1991 Jiu-Jitsu vs Luta Livre challenge and reached the final of World Vale Tudo Challenge III against Mark Kerr. Gurgel later became a decorated master-division champion, winning European titles in 2007, 2009, and 2010, and a Pan American in 2008, all while rebuilding Alliance into a powerhouse after the 2002 split that formed Master Team.
