## Overview

**Name:** Flavio Behring

**Belt Rank:** Red Belt

**Date of Birth:** November 21, 1937 (age 88)

## Bio

Flavio Behring, a red belt under João Alberto Barreto, began training at age ten at Hélio Gracie’s academy in Rio de Janeiro, where his asthma was aggravated by dusty mats rather than cured. By 1951, Hélio had Barreto polish the young Behring, who soon shared mats with Carlson Gracie and Armando Wridt. At fifteen, Carlos Gracie threw him into a test match against a twenty-year-old Judo black belt from Oswaldo Fadda’s line; Behring, terrified, was repeatedly taken down but managed to choke the opponent unconscious. He stepped in as an instructor when Barreto injured his knee in 1955, later coached at a YMCA and with Barreto in Copacabana, and opened a Barra da Tijuca academy with Ricardo Murgel in the 1970s. Moving to São Paulo in 1987 with his son Marcelo Behring, the family weathered Marcelo’s tragic 1994 death from addiction, and Flavio received his red belt from Barreto.
