A small-town kid from Bacabal, Maranhão, Gabriel Costa moved to São Luís at 12, started jiu-jitsu under Roberto Ferreira at a Guigo Jiu-Jitsu Team affiliate, and soon made the state capital his training home. His standout blue-belt performances on the São Paulo circuit earned him a full-time scholarship at Guigo Headquarters under Luiz Guilherme “Guigo.” Maranhão swept every major Brazilian Gi tournament but couldn’t crack the U.S. circuit due to visa issues. He took silver at the 2020 European Open, then received his black belt from Guigo in November 2020. A 2020 match against Oliver Dillon marked an early test at the new rank.
