## Overview

**Name:** Gabriel Moraes

**Nickname:** Gabrielzinho

## Bio

Gabriel Moraes, known as “Gabrielzinho,” earned his black belt in a rare direct jump from purple, a leap that immediately paid off when he won the World Championship just months later in 2004. Starting at 15 under the Monteiro Brothers in Manaus, he dominated the lower belts with two blue belt world titles and a Brazilian National Championship at purple. Backed by Carlos Vieira Holanda and later representing Checkmat through 2015, Moraes’s meteoric rise nearly ended due to lack of sponsorship before the black belt opened doors, cementing his place in BJJ history with that unprecedented world title run.
