# George Gracie ("Gato Ruivo")

>

## Overview

**Name:** George Gracie

**Nickname:** Gato Ruivo

## Bio

The second youngest of the Gracie brothers, George Gracie — known as "Gato Ruivo" — was Carlos’s star pupil at the first Gracie Academy and a ferocious vale tudo competitor whose wild-man lifestyle often put him at odds with his older brother. A natural sponge for grappling knowledge, he became an assistant coach early on and racked up wins over capoeiristas Coronel, Jayme Martins Ferreira, and Mario Aleixo, as well as powerlifter Tico Soledade, whom he choked despite a 17kg weight disadvantage. His fallout with Carlos began after Helio’s draw with Fred Ebert and deepened over George’s preference for luta livre and nightlife; he split from the family multiple times, suffered his first loss in 1934 to Zbysco Waldek by armbar, and later replaced Helio on short notice to beat three men in one night.
