A feared competitor from Brazil’s Northeast, Horlando Monteiro rose through the ranks of Kimura/Nova União under Jair Lourenço after starting his jiu-jitsu at age 12 with GF Team’s Tayrone Dasmaceno. His standout campaign from blue to brown belt marked him as one of the region’s most dangerous grapplers before he earned his black belt on November 1, 2016, awarded jointly by Lourenço, Gustavo Dantas, and Marcelo ‘Caneta’ Pinheiro. Monteiro’s game, sharpened by Dantas’s mental coaching, made him a regular on the U.S. competition circuit, though his biggest titles remain tied to his interstate dominance.
