Jaime Canuto, “The Armbar Machine,” emerged from the surfing town of Saquarema after realizing his talent ceiling in the waves was lower than on the mats. A brief teenage flirtation with capoeira gave way to jiu-jitsu, and he never left the GF Team orbit under Renato Verás “Perninha.” His black belt promotion came on the 2013 World Championship podium itself, awarded by Julio Cesar Pereira after Canuto armbarred four of six opponents en route to gold — a debut that defined his signature finish and stamped him as a submission-first competitor from day one of the rank.
