## Overview

**Name:** Jose Carlos

**Date of Birth:** December 25, 1976 (age 49)

## Bio

A black belt under Jair Lourenço and part of the Kimura / Nova União lineage, Jose Carlos is the man who planted BJJ’s flag in Gjøvik, Norway after relocating there in the mid-2000s. A former judoka who started at age 8 in Natal, he only discovered jiu-jitsu as a teenager through the Lourenço brothers. Unable to commute two hours to Oslo for training, he opened his own affiliate and within two years quit his farming job to teach full-time. His academy has since become a European reference point, producing the first breakout competitors from his region.
