## Bio

Lloyd Irvin took an unorthodox path to black belt under Leonardo Dalla, earning his rank largely through self-directed training after Dalla returned to Brazil, then built a massive BJJ empire in Maryland by applying his marketing degree with aggressive advertising campaigns that drew criticism for supposedly “Americanizing” the sport. His team nonetheless produced elite competitors like Mike Fowler, JT Torres, and Ryan Hall, though Irvin’s own competitive career was cut short by a severe neck injury in 2001. In 2013, two of his students were arrested for raping a female teammate, and Irvin faced renewed scrutiny over a 1990 misconduct allegation of which he was absolved; his subsequent PR strategy—flooding YouTube with rape prevention videos and registering the domain “lloydirvinrape.com”—prompted senior athletes including Keenan Cornelius and JT Torres to leave the team.
