## Overview

**Name:** Marcel Gonçalves

**Date of Birth:** December 15, 1986 (age 39)

## Bio

Marcel Gonçalves was an early student of Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, joining the camp when Cyborg first opened his academy near Gonçalves’s home in Mato Grosso do Sul. Promoted to black belt by Abreu in 2010, he spent time training under Marcos Vinicius in California and later based himself in Florida. His competitive career is overshadowed by his March 2018 arrest in Naples, Florida, for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old student. Gonçalves admitted to the charges, was expelled from Fight Sports by Cyborg, and lost his own academy. His subsequent legal defense, citing CTE from his MMA and grappling career, drew public scrutiny from promoter Mo Jassim.
