## Overview

**Name:** Marcelo Behring

**Belt Rank:** Black Belt

## Bio

Son of red belt Flavio Behring, Marcelo Behring chose Rickson Gracie’s gym at fourteen and was an assistant coach by sixteen, blending a surfing star’s charisma with a champion’s Jiu-Jitsu. Training often with Roberto Lage, he brought a modern style to São Paulo in 1987, running seminars across lineages and drawing surfers into the sport through magazine interviews. His epic 1988 war with Cassio Cardoso—two thirty-minute rounds, Cardoso winning 6x2 on guard passes—defined his competitive peak. A tragic drug addiction led to his death by gunshot in 1995, buried as an indigent, robbing the community of a charismatic ambassador.
