## Bio

Born 18 December 1988 in Araruama, Rio de Janeiro, Marcos Tinoco started jiu-jitsu at 16 under Juarez Soares, a student of Monir Salomao. A tough competitor raised in Soares’ tournament-driven Araruama Jiu-Jitsu, he won local and statewide events before traveling to the US for the Pan American Championship as a purple belt. A meeting at the 2012 World Pro in Abu Dhabi led him to his future wife, who worked for a Marcelo Garcia affiliate; after training at MG’s New York headquarters, he switched teams in 2013 with Soares’ blessing. Under Garcia, Tinoco won a world title in 2014 and received his black belt on 19 January 2015.
