## Overview

**Name:** Matheus Gonzaga

**Date of Birth:** January 25, 1995 (age 31)

## Bio

A mountain-region kid from Teresópolis who started jiu-jitsu in 2005 to escape school bullying, Matheus Gonzaga rose through the Nova Barra and Pitbull academies before Rodolfo Vieira’s invitation pulled him into GF Team’s Rio headquarters. There he won a purple belt world title, then hit a hard reset after moving to Boston with no sponsors—a nearly year-long layoff that ended when Daniel Gazoni promoted him and his brother Marcos Paulo to black belt in December 2017. Further training under Bernardo Faria and later André Galvão at Atos San Diego sharpened a game best known for his cross choke and spider guard pass, documented in his own instructionals.
