## Overview

**Name:** Omar Salum

**Date of Birth:** July 22, 1975 (age 51)

## Bio

Omar Salum’s competitive career reads like a cautionary tale about raw talent versus discipline — after getting submitted twice by a 12-year-old orange belt in a backyard brawl, he signed up at Associação Monteiro under Fábio “Binho” Monteiro and won his first state championship with four purple belt scalps inside two months of training. That early success nearly derailed him when a heavy defeat at the 1996 World Championships forced a move to Rio to train under his idol Royler Gracie at Gracie Humaitá. Awarded his black belt by Royler in 1999, Salum then won back-to-back world titles in the roosterweight division (1999 and 2000), setting a consecutive-title record that stood for a decade before a severe knee injury in 2001 ended his run at lightweight.
