## Overview

**Name:** Rolls Gracie

## Bio

Son of Carlos Gracie raised by Helio, Rolls Gracie shattered the family’s insularity by cross-training in freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman, sambo, and judo—first with Osvaldo Alves, then with five-time US wrestling champ Bob Anderson, whose stay in Rio produced the lore that the keylock was dubbed “Americana” in Brazil. A two-weight Pan American sambo gold medalist in 1979, he also won a bronze at the 1980 Pan Ams with a Gracie Team he assembled. His global vision clashed with Helio’s traditionalism, leading him to join Carlson Gracie before founding his own academy in Rua Figueiredo Magalhães. He died at 31 in a 1983 paragliding accident.
